BRCGS FOR FOOD SAFETY

BRITISH RETAIL CONSORTIUM GLOBAL STANDARD FOR FOOD SAFETY

Brand Reputation Compliance Global Standards (BRCGS), previously known as British Retail Consortium (BRC), is a global standard that was developed and published in 1998. It was the first standard to be recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) as part of its commitment to reduce the need for multiple audits of suppliers by harmonizing international food safety standards as well as defining food fraud and reducing audit burden through additional modules. In recent years, consumers and governments across the world have made food safety one of their key priorities on a global scale. Therefore, they ensure that products comply with regulations by testing and certifying them appropriately, while also dealing with commercial pressures to control costs and reduce time to market. Consequently, increasing number of retailers and food service providers are mandating that their suppliers are certified against a scheme approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). With over 19,000 food certificates annually issued by 1,500 auditors working for 64 certifying bodies, the BRCGS for Food Safety is the most extensively used commercial standard for ensuring the production of safe food. The much-awaited "Issue 8" update, published in August 2018, is largely regarded as acceptable by many of the largest manufacturers, merchants, and food service companies in the world. The Standard also offers a global seal on quality for those who possess the certificate. The BRCGS Global Food Safety Standard constituted the industry standard for more than 20 years. It has been adopted by more than 20,000 sites across 130 countries, and it is recognized by 70% of the top 10 global retailers, 60% of the top 10 quick-service restaurants, and 50% of the top 25 manufacturers.
